American Sonnet for My Wife with a First Line Borrowed from Terrance Hayes
Justin Evans
Today we’re going to get to work on the details,
lie down in the tall grass, and let the sun and sky
pass us overhead while we decide what animals
clouds look like, what fantastical menagerie we
can populate. We’re going to smell the neighbor’s
barbeque slow-cook pork butt and listen to his kids
play in the sprinklers while their dog yaps along, his
puppy feet gathering in rhythm deep into the day
as it slides effortlessly into late afternoon. Believe me
it’s the small things that matter most – the dots
above your “i’s” and the way the hair on my arm
stands on end when I see you smile. It’s time for us
to get to work and build the second half of our life
here, in the tall grass, focusing on each small detail.
