Submit to the 2026 contest!

Submissions for the Fugue 2026 Annual Writing Contest will open soon! This year’s judges are Emily Mitchell (prose) and Kimberly Johnson (poetry).

Contest winners in both categories will receive $1,000 prizes and publication in our 2027 print issue. Submissions fees are $20 and multiple submissions are allowed. Our prose category is open to both nonfiction and fiction submissions, which will be judged together, and welcomes hybrid work.


Prose Contest

Opens January 1st, 2026

Prose Contest submissions should include no more than one piece per submission in a .doc, .docx (preferred), or .PDF document. We ask that submissions not exceed 7000 words. Multiple submissions are considered as long as a separate fee is paid for each.

Contest winners in prose receive $1,000 and publication in Fugue's 2027 print issue. All entries are considered for publication. We look forward to reading your work!

Poetry Contest

Poetry Contest submissions should include 1-3 poems per submission in a .doc, .docx (preferred), or .PDF document. Multiple submissions are considered as long as a separate fee is paid for each. 

Contest winners in poetry receive $1,000 and publication in Fugue's 2027 print issue. All entries are considered for publication. We look forward to reading your work!

Eligibility

Former and current students of the judges should refrain from submitting.

Anyone currently affiliated with the University of Idaho is not eligible to submit to this contest and should refrain from submitting until they have been unaffiliated for three years.
