Art & Hybrid

Artist Statement: These collage works are part of a larger book length project, me & me, an artistic recontextualization of an older paperback translation of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. All of this work is analog collage, assembled using scissors, glue sticks, magazines, stamps, various decks of cards, newspaper, film, postcards, found materials and other ephemera. In creating many of the longer erasure sequences many of the pages had to be trimmed. The words from the tops and bottoms of these discarded portions were then each cut out individually and reconstituted in the visual collage poems seen here.

David Joez Villaverde holds an MFA from the Helen Zell Writers' Program at the University of Michigan. A CantoMundo fellow, he has received honors from the American Academy of Poets, Best New Poets, and the Black Warrior Review. His visual poetry has appeared in The Rumpus, Diode, ctrl+v, Quarterly West, Thrush, and Guesthouse. He lives in New York and can be found at schadenfreudeanslip.com
